I’m totally obsessed with the autumn colours in my Ringwood North 2023 project! 💚⁠

When autumn rolls around, everything becomes breathtakingly colourful! The trees go from their boring summer look to a vibrant explosion of golds, reds, oranges, and browns.⁠
⁠
It’s like a big art show, where every tree has a special shade that perfectly complements the others. The maples show off fiery reds, while the birches steal the show with brilliant yellows. And let’s not forget about the oaks, with their deep oranges that perfectly complement the sweetgums’ soft purples.⁠ ⁠

All these amazing colours pop against the backdrop of evergreens, creating a stunning contrast that makes everything look rich and deep. This warm, cosy glow makes the whole landscape look even more magical when the sunlight peeks through the trees.⁠ ⁠

It’s like nature is showing off its incredible talent for colour and design, reminding us how beautiful diversity can be.⁠ 💚⁠

This picture from my 2016 Blackburn project is one of my favourite views. When you enter the front yard, the water fountain is a simple but elegant addition to the front garden and the new arbour.⁠
⁠
I have a question for you today. Do you consider water fountains a piece of art or merely play a single role as a water feature? I’ve asked several people this question and had a mixed response. ⁠
⁠
Water fountains are art pieces because they merge functionality with aesthetic expression. Many are intricately designed and crafted, often featuring sculptural elements that evoke a sense of beauty and creativity. ⁠
⁠
They’re often positioned as focal points, creating balance and harmony within the larger spatial context.⁠ However, they have to be the right size to suit the space.⁠
⁠
Additionally, they add another dimension to the garden—sound. Who doesn’t love the soft, soothing sound of water falling into a pond? Many water features available nowadays can achieve this if carefully selected.⁠
⁠
This is certainly not a new idea. Historically, there have been many iconic fountains spread across the world, which often carry cultural significance. They have become landmarks or symbols of a particular era or community, adding further depth and importance to the fountain’s status as a piece of art.⁠
⁠
Through thoughtful design, symbolism, movement, and integration into their surroundings, water fountains transform spaces into dynamic and aesthetically enriching environments, earning their status as pieces of art that engage viewers on both visual and other sensory levels.⁠

Many of us may be limited in space when adding art

Many of us may be limited in space when adding art to our house or garden. Why not take a leaf out of this example and put art on one of the blank walls in your garden instead?⁠

It’s unique and provides an additional visual interest that compliments the plants placed in front of it beautifully! You can paint something like this quite easily or even hire your local muralist, as I’m sure they will be more than happy to help. Alternatively, you can even get the whole family involved! 😉⁠

Here are two essential tips highlighting the importance of choosing the correct pots:⁠

🌵 Proper Drainage: Adequate drainage is crucial for the health of most plants. Choosing pots with drainage holes allows excess water to escape, preventing waterlogging and the potential development of root rot.⁠

Poorly drained pots can lead to stagnant water at the bottom, depriving plant roots of oxygen and causing damage. When selecting pots, prioritize those with drainage holes to ensure a healthy root environment and prevent water-related issues.⁠

I love the colours and contrasts in this planting palette at the Melbourne Zoo! It’s such an inspirational place to be, to be honest. It’s a lovely setting, and it’s always amazing to see all the beautiful animals living there and share that experience with my little ones!⁠

I think I spotted this setting somewhere near where the giraffes are housed. The path is surrounded by grass on both sides and then you see this lovely clearing with a pop of colour!⁠

The two hanging iron circles and the rocks effortlessly stacked at the bottom of the circle. It looks pretty romantic, but maybe I’m a softie 😉💚⁠

Reuse and Recycle!⁠

I enjoy upcycling some of my designs whenever I get the chance! Not all projects can accommodate this, considering the cost versus the benefit. However, it’s delightful to witness items being repurposed to bring even more happiness during their existence.⁠
⁠
Take my MIFGS display as an example of how I incorporated repurposed elements into the design:⁠
⁠
💚 Custom table - I placed it on my deck for my own enjoyment and also as a handy storage spot. It serves a double purpose!⁠
💚 Pots & Chair - I cheekily added them to the design for my own future benefit. They now have their permanent spots in my home! 🤩⁠
💚 Wall hangings - they found new homes, and some were further repurposed with attachments for candles and incense sticks, just as I originally intended.⁠
💚 Plants - they also found new homes (check out the last picture), some planted in my own garden, and others given away as gifts. I want them to thrive, as they shared their natural beauty with me when I needed it for the display. The least I could do was ensure they found good homes!⁠
💚 Wood - repurposed for another garden project with my friends.⁠
💚 Framing material - recycled as mulch, unless it was painted.⁠
💚 Skylight - repurposed for another garden project with my friends.⁠
💚 Mulch, Sand, Stone, Pavers - repurposed for another garden project with my friends.⁠
💚 Battery & 12V powered lights - all reused at home!⁠
⁠
Unfortunately, I couldn’t do anything about the backdrop, mural, or rendered walls, but at least only the painted/stained backboards and these were the parts that had to go to the tip!⁠
⁠
Overall, there was minimal waste, and only the parts I couldn’t find another use for ended up being discarded!

I know that sometimes it’s not economical trying to upcycle but it’s so immensely rewarding in other ways when you do! 😀

I love using climbers in my designs. Maintenance is key. This stunning picture is of a yellow climbing rose from a garden I was lucky to visit in San Gimignano, Siena, Italy.⁠

Don’t you think there’s something magical about trees? They all have their own story to tell.⁠

I love how the trunks of this tree shape my view of the garden and sky beyond. It makes me curious to see what’s out there and to be part of it, with the bonus of enjoying its immediate shade as well!⁠
