The truth is, we need more vegetation in our cities. Trees that cast shade, understorey plantings that support pollinators and wildlife, and diverse garden beds that cool the urban environment; all of these require water, particularly while they are getting established.
As Kirkpatrick notes in his Landscape Australia article, our dry summer cities need irrigation to increase vegetative biomass meaningfully, and that irrigation does not have to be permanent. Recognising this can empower you to take responsible action for a thriving, sustainable garden.
